You Don’t Have to Be a Great Writer to Write
Writing doesn’t have to be polished, profound, or even read to improve the person doing it.

It’s 2:53 a.m., and I’ve woken up reasonably refreshed and ready to get in some writing.

Writing is one of those things that, if you’re not doing it consistently, you build some resistance to. You lose a bit of that muscle.

Now, I’m not a good writer by any means, probably because I spend zero time editing, so I don’t polish my turds. But that doesn’t mean my writing is without purpose, not even when it doesn’t get read.

The act of writing is a positive experience for the writer, not just in the short term, when you feel like something has been accomplished, but for the structure of the mind as well. Writing is clear thinking. It is reflecting. For some, imagining. It’s a great practice.

Of course, if I played cricket, I’d say cricket was a great practice, but for the mind, writing is great.

Unfortunately, I don’t write every day because I only write when I get up early, not during the day. So if I get up after 6 a.m., I don’t do the reps. I move on to other creative or household endeavours. The resistance is too much for me later on.

Maybe I should double down on the practice so I’m getting in the reps every day. I’ve been at that stage before, and that’s when the practice of writing really comes alive. The flywheel starts to spin, and away you go.

I’d also be a lot better writer if I read more. I listen to books in audio, mainly through text-to-speech. They say a good writer is a good reader, but really, doing one is better than doing none, even if you level up more with both.

And I don’t read fiction, and I don’t write fiction. I’m stuck in the real. That’s what interests me. But if I did read fiction, I could convey the real a lot better and give my writing gravity, which it really doesn’t have, like good writing does.

I’m thinking of doing a course, maybe next year, to improve that, but I don’t want to be a great writer. I just want to express my thoughts and ideas and share them with others.

Maybe you should do the same. There is power in it.
